MCP-1 is a member of the CC subgroup of the chemokine superfamily. It is produced by a variety of cell types including monocytes, lymphocytes, endothelial cells and fibroblasts after stimulation by any inflammatory mediator. MCP-1 acts as a potent chemoattractant and is thought to play an important role in the inflammatory response of blood monocytes, tissue macrophages and natural killer cells. Its expression has been documented in disorders characterized by mononuclear cell infiltrates, suggesting that it may contribute to the inflammatory component of diseases such as atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, or rheumatoid arthritis.
