GeneTex Webinar: The interface of the ovary and fallopian tube during ovarian cancer formation and spread
Ovarian cancer (OC), of which there are five major clinically defined histotypes, is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women. The overall five-year survival rate remains bleak (<50%), with the majority of patients presenting with metastatic disease and an even more dismal five-year survival rate of less than 20%. The most common OC histotype, high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), is responsible for 70-80% of OC deaths. Therefore, understanding the pathogenesis of HGSOC is crucial for developing new diagnostic modalities to detect this malignancy early in addition to establishing mechanism-based treatments and preventative strategies. Dr. Burdette's profusely productive laboratory employs a multifaceted approach to expand knowledge of HGSOC, ranging from novel studies on its cellular origins, the molecular crosstalk that influences spread, and the identification of potential therapeutic agents derived from natural sources. Her talk today will discuss these major contributions against this lethal malignancy.
