4-Phenylbutyric acid is a prophylactic antibiotic that has minimal toxicity. It has been shown to significantly up-regulate protein synthesis in kidney cells and to have neural cell protective effects. 4-Phenylbutyric acid also inhibits the production of dextran sulfate, which may be useful for the treatment of liver injury.
