BPHL is a Serine hydrolase which Belongs to the AB hydrolase superfamily. This family catalyzes the hydrolytic activation of aa ester prodrugs of nucleoside analogs such as valacyclovir and valganciclovir. This protein is expressed at high levels in liver and kidney and at lower levels in heart, intestine and skeletal muscle. It plays a role in detoxification processes. BPHL is a specific alpha-aa ester hydrolase that prefers small, hydrophobic, and aromatic side chains and does not have a stringent requirement for the leaving group other than preferring a primary alcohol. Source: Recombinant protein corresponding to aa38-291 of human BPHL, fused to His-tag at N-terminal expressed in E. coli.
