The rabies virus nucleoprotein (N) is a highly conserved structural protein essential for viral replication. It tightly encapsulates the viral RNA genome, forming ribonucleoprotein complexes (RNPs) that protect the RNA and serve as templates for transcription/replication. The N protein of the CVS11 strain (a challenge virus standard) is a major antigen that induces robust Tcell immunity and neutralizing antibodies. AntiN antibodies are valuable tools for diagnosing rabies infections, studying viral morphogenesis, and developing vaccines or therapeutics due to Ns high immunogenicity and crossreactivity across lyssaviruses.
