Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) is the prototypic ligand of the TNF superfamily. TNFalpha is a pleiotropic cytokine that is capable to promote inflammation, to induce apoptotic cell death, and to inhibit tumorigenesis and viral replication.
