Fatty acid binding proteins are a family of small, highly conserved, cytoplasmic proteins (14-15kDa) that bind long chain fatty acids, their CoA derivatives, billirubin, organic anions and other small hydrophobic molecules. L-FABP (or FABP-1) is found predominantly in liver and is believed to be involved in the regulation of lipid transport and metabolism and is required for cholesterol synthesis and metabolism
