BLP-3, or bombinin like peptide 3, is a nonhemolytic member of the class A bombinins, bombinins being a wide family of antimicrobial peptides from Xenopus skin. BLP-3 is active against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, significantly so against Neisseria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Upon interaction with biomimetic membranes BLP-3 inserts into the bilayer in two different steps corresponding to different levels of penetration. BLP-3 has also potent activity against Candida albicans.
