Selenocystine is a selenium-containing analog of an essential amino acid and a key precursor for selenoprotein synthesis. Selenocystine inhibits/eradicates bacterial biofilms and acts against respiratory tract pathogens. Selenocystine induces DNA damage, promotes ROS burst, downregulates the expression of antioxidant enzymes SOD1, SOD2 and CAT, and induces tumor cell apoptosis. Selenocystine can be used in research on pathogenic bacterial infections and cancers such as liver cancer[1][2].
