Human SERPINA1 mRNA encodes the human serpin family A member 1 (SERPINA1) protein, a serine protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. SERPINA1s major physiological function is the protection of the lower respiratory tract against proteolytic destruction by human leukocyte elastase (HLE).
