alpha-1,3-Galactosyltransferase (a1,3GalT) (GGTA1) catalyzes the generation of the alpha-gal glycan via the transfer of a galactose (Gal) in alpha1-3 linkage, from a uridyl-diphosphate (UDP) donor onto the N-acetyllactosamine (Galbeta1,4GlcNAc-R) of glycoproteins. alpha-1,3-Galactosyltransferase (a1,3GalT) is responsible for the synthesis of the alpha-galactose (alpha-Gal) epitope found in most mammalian species[1].
