(25RS)-Schidegera saponin D1 (Saponin YSM4) is an anti-yeast steroidal saponin that exhibits significant inhibitory activity against food spoilage yeasts and film-forming yeasts. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of (25RS)-Schidegera saponin D1 against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa are 6.25 µg/mL and 3.13 µg/mL, respectively. (25RS)-Schidegera saponin D1 can be used in research on food preservation to extend the shelf life of foods containing rice, beans, processed fish and meat, and fermented condiments. (25RS)-Schidegera saponin D1 can be isolated from the plant Yucca schidigera (Mohave Yucca).
