The PSMA protein is a multifunctional enzyme with folate hydrolase and NAALADase activities and a preference for tri-alpha-glutamic acid peptides. It absorbs folate in the intestines, aids in important metabolic processes, and modulates excitatory neurotransmission in the brain by hydrolyzing NAAG to release glutamate.
