MME proteins exhibit thermolysin-like specificity and primarily degrade polypeptides of up to 30 amino acids. Crucially, it plays a key role in cleaving the Gly-Phe bond to degrade opioid peptides, including Met-enkephalin and Leu-enkephalin.
