RPE proteins play a key role in cellular metabolism by catalyzing the reversible epimerization of D-ribulose 5-phosphate to D-xylulose 5-phosphate. This enzyme activity is a key step in the non-oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway and promotes the interconversion of pentose phosphates.
