The LOX-1/OLR1 protein plays an important role as a receptor that recognizes, internalizes, and degrades oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), a marker of atherosclerosis, in vascular endothelial cells. OxLDL induces endothelial dysfunction, triggering pro-inflammatory responses, oxidative conditions, and apoptosis.
