EXOSC9 is a noncatalytic RNA exosome complex component that critically drives 3->5 exoribonuclease activity and contributes to a variety of cellular RNA processing and degradation events. In the nucleus, it helps stabilize the maturation of RNA species and eliminates processing by-products, non-coding transcripts and defective mRNAs, thereby inhibiting their cytoplasmic export.
