Alternative Synonym:
CH3L2_HUMAN, CHI3L2, Chitinase-3-like protein 2, Chondrocyte protein 39, YKL 39, YKL-39, YKL39
The CHI3L2 protein, also known as chitinase-3-like protein 2, is a glycoprotein that belongs to the chitinase protein family. It is primarily associated with various biological processes, including inflammation, tissue remodeling, and immune responses. CHI3L2 is expressed in various tissues, such as the lungs, liver, and immune cells, suggesting its involvement in diverse physiological functions. CHI3L2 has been implicated in modulating immune responses and inflammatory processes. It is often associated with conditions characterized by inflammation, such as autoimmune diseases and certain cancers. The proteins precise mechanism of action is still under investigation, but it is believed to play a role in cell signaling and the regulation of cellular interactions within the immune system. HI3L2/YKL-39 has been explored as a biomarker in cancer diagnosis:Elevated levels of CHI3L2 in the serum or tissues have been investigated as potential biomarkers for cancer detection and prognosis. Monitoring CHI3L2 levels may aid in cancer diagnosis and assessment of disease progression. Inflammatory joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, have shown increased CHI3L2 expression. Detection of CHI3L2 levels in synovial fluid or blood may have diagnostic value in rheumatoid arthritis. CHI3L2/YKl-39 has also been explored as a biomarker for cardiovascular diseases. Elevated levels in the blood may indicate vascular inflammation and provide insights into cardiovascular risk.
