This compound, also known as ()-Mevalonolactone or Mevalolactone, is the delta-lactone form of mevalonic acid and serves as a precursor in the mevalonate pathway. DL-Mevalonolactone is orally active against myopathy caused by HMGCR mutations and statins. Additionally, it induces inflammatory and oxidative stress responses, reduces mitochondrial membrane potential, and causes mitochondrial swelling.
