It aids in defense by acting as a direct repellent and indirectly by attracting natural enemies of herbivorous insects. This compound draws the Asian corn borer (ACB, Ostrinia furnacalis) larvae. Moreover, exogenously supplementing (E,E)-4,8,12-Trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene reduces the larvaes ability to locate corn already infested by pests.
