PapRIV is an agonist of BV-2 microglial cells that activates these cells via an NF-kappaB-dependent pathway. It induces the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNFalpha and enhances the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, PapRIV is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier.
