RL-37 is an alpha-helical antimicrobial peptide. It can be isolated from the bone marrow of rhesus monkeys. RL-37 rapidly permeates Escherichia coli ML-35p cell membranes and lyses liposomes. It exhibits effective antibacterial activity against staphylococci, including both wild-type and methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains, as well as S. epidermidis (ATCC 49741). RL-37 is applicable in studies on human skin infections.
