Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It can be synthesized by the body from the amino acid tryptophan, or taken as a dietary supplement. Niacinamide has been shown to reduce inflammation and to alleviate skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and rosacea. It also has anti-oxidant properties, which scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit lipid peroxidation. In addition, it protects against radiation damage by reducing lipid peroxidation. Niacinamide is available in two forms: niacinamide ascorbate and nicotinamide riboside. Both forms are used for their anti-inflammatory effects on the skin, but niacinamide ascorbate has also been shown to improve skin condition when used with topical treatments such as polymerization initiator chromium picolinate or vitamin D3.
