3-Oxo-7alpha-hydroxy-5beta-cholanoic acid is a fatty acid that is an intermediate in the synthesis of bile acids. It is formed by the addition of hydroxyl groups to 7alpha, 12beta-dihydroxycholesterol. The ethyl esters of 3-oxo-7alpha, 12beta-dihydroxycholesterol are converted to 3-oxo-7alpha, 12beta, 15beta-, and 16beta hydroxycholesterols by the action of bacteria such as Clostridium sp. or Propionibacterium sp. The formation of 3-oxo-7alpha, 12beta, 15beta-, and 16beta hydroxycholesterols may be promoted by the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl) or trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). 3OHDCA can be used for profiling human liver microsomes via HPLC analysis.
