Fluorexon is a novel fluorogenic probe that can be used as an optical sensor to measure the activity of polymerase chain reactions. Fluorexon has been shown to localize in mitochondria and to induce cytotoxicity in cancer cells. The drug also induces apoptosis through mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization and oxidative injury. This compound has demonstrated acute toxicities, but it is not known if these are due to its effects on drug transporters or its ability to increase cytosolic calcium.
