Cobalt(III) acetylacetonate is a coordination compound that contains cobalt in the +3 oxidation state. It has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory activity and is used as an adjuvant for treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Cobalt(III) acetylacetonate is synthesized by combining acetic acid with cobalt chloride and heating to produce a red/orange liquid. The reaction mechanism of this compound has been determined using nmr spectra and kinetic data. Structural analysis of the compound has also been carried out by means of chromatographic methods, thermodynamic measurements, and hydration studies. The solubility of cobalt(III) acetylacetonate has been tested in a number of organic solvents, which showed that it was soluble in benzene but insoluble in water or ethanol. Cobalt(III) acetylacetonate is also bound to proteins due to its high affinity.
