Luciferins are light-emitting heterocyclic compounds commonly used in biochemistry. Luciferin is the natural ligand for the enzyme luciferase, which oxidizes the substrate, emitting energy in the form of light in the process. Firefly luciferase requires ATP for its reaction, emitting a greenish-yellow luminescence at a peak wavelength of approximately 530 nm. The free acid form of luciferin requires addition of a dilute base such as NaOH or KOH to dissolve in water. Synonyms: (S)-2-(6-Hydroxy-2-benzothiazolyl)-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid, Firefly Luciferin, Beetle Luciferin, (2Z,4S)-2-(6-oxo-1,3-benzothiazol-2-ylidene)-1, 3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid CAS No: 2591-17-5 Molecular Formula: C11H8N2O3S2 Molecular Weight: 280.33 Purity: 99% (HPLC) Appearance: Light yellow powder Solubility: Clear solution (0.25% in Methanol) Soluble in water with a dilute base NaOH or KOH 1H NMR: Conforms to structure Storage and Stability: Powder may be stored at -20C.
