Avobenzone is a sunscreen agent that absorbs ultraviolet light in the UVA range and protects the skin from sunburn. This compound is also used in other applications, such as to protect photo-sensitive devices from damage by UV radiation. Avobenzone is a derivative of coumarin with hydroxyl groups on each ring. It has been shown to be genotoxic, having the potential to induce autoimmune diseases and skin cancer in vivo. The rate of absorption of avobenzone into human skin cells varies depending on the type of cell. There are two types of avobenzone: one which absorbs UVB rays and one which absorbs UVA rays, however, it has been found that both types are able to penetrate into the deeper layers of skin cells. This may lead to harmful effects, including DNA damage or cancerous changes in cells.
