Bathocuproine disulfonic acid disodium salt is a diagnostic agent that binds to the wild-type strain of dna, preventing the binding of nucleotides. This prevents the formation of oxidative DNA and inhibits viral replication. Bathocuproine disulfonic acid disodium salt is an anti-viral agent that has been shown to inhibit the uptake of nucleic acids by cells, as well as reaction products. It also blocks enzyme activities in the proximal tubules and inhibits enzymes involved in viral replication. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood, but it may be due to metal chelation or reacting with acidic groups on proteins. Bathocuproine disulfonic acid disodium salt is orally administered and may be used for enzyme preparations.
