Edrophonium chloride is a cholinergic drug that is used to diagnose and treat conditions of the heart. It works by increasing the strength of heart muscle contractions, which improves blood flow to the heart and reduces congestion. Edrophonium chlorides diagnostic use is limited to patients with congestive heart failure who have not been treated with other drugs because it may cause paresis. It has also been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of HIV infection and autoimmune diseases.
