Lithium sulfate monohydrate is a lithium salt that is used as a reagent to produce lithium carbonate. It can also be used as an acid in the production of deuterium oxide, which is an important component in the manufacture of nuclear reactor fuel. Lithium sulfate monohydrate has been shown to react with water vapor and ethylene diamine to form a metastable compound called lithium ethylene diamine tetrahydrate, which can then be dehydrated to form lithium ammonia tetrahydrate. This dehydration reaction has been shown to depend on the deuterium isotope effect.
