Methyl Methanesulfonate is used as a reagent in the synthesis of 2-Methyllamotrigine, an impurity of Lamotrigine which is an anticonvulsant that inhibits glutamate release, possible through inhibition of sodium, potassium and calcium currents. Also used in treatment of bipolar depression.
