Sodium thioctate is a pharmaceutical dosage form of the drug thiocyanate. It has been used to treat congestive heart failure, as well as cancer and inflammation. Thiocyanate is a salt of hydrocyanic acid, which is formed by the reaction of hydroxide with sulfur dioxide. The salt reacts with magnesium to form a complex that is soluble in water. This compound has also been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in cell cultures. In addition, sodium thiocyanate inhibits glutamate dehydrogenase and alpha-glucosidase, which are enzymes involved in the metabolism of glucose and release of insulin, respectively. alpha-Lipoic Acid (Thioctic acid) sodium is an antioxidant, which is an essential cofactor of mitochondrial enzyme complexes. alpha-Lipoic Acid sodium inhibits NF-kappaB-dependent HIV-1 LTR activation. alpha-Lipoic Acid sodium induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis in hepatoma cells. alpha-Lipoic Acid sodium can be used with CPUL1 to construct the self-assembled nanoaggregate CPUL1-LA NA, which has improved antitumor efficacy than CPUL1.
