Calystegine B2 is a chaperone that is used in vitro to study the secondary structure of proteins. It is synthesized by light exposure of calystegin B1, which has a hydroxyl group and two nitrogen atoms. Calystegine B2 has been shown to inhibit inflammation in an experimental model. It also binds to oligosaccharides, which are found in the cell wall of plants and fungi. This binding prevents the interaction between the oligosaccharide and the enzyme protein synthesis. Calystegine B2 can also bind to chaperones, inhibiting their ability to facilitate protein folding.
