L-Glucono-1,5-lactone is a crystalline compound that is used in structural biology and as a growth factor. It has been shown to inhibit the transfer of phosphate from ATP to protein substrates, binding to receptor sites and inhibiting the activity of enzymes such as protein kinase C. L-Glucono-1,5-lactone has also been shown to bind to an aluminum ion with a constant of 0.5 M. This binding inhibits the enzymatic activity of phosphatases that hydrolyze phosphate esters which are important for cellular metabolism. L-Glucono-1,5-lactone is an aliphatic hydrocarbon that can be found in crystalline form. The molecular formula for this compound is CH(COCH)O and its chemical structure is comprised of two rings (A), a six member ring (B) and a five member ring (C).
