Icariin is a natural compound found in the plant Epimedium, also known as horny goat weed. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic effects. Icariin inhibits the production of cell factor that triggers inflammation, and reduces cholesterol levels by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This compound also has a hypoglycemic effect and can be used for the treatment of coronary heart diseases. Icariin has been shown to inhibit the development of atherosclerotic lesions in animal models.
