Involved in clearance and endocytosis of hoglobin/haptoglobin complexes by macrophages and may thereby protect tissues from free hoglobin-mediated oxidative damage. May play a role in the uptake and recycling of iron, via endocytosis of hoglobin/haptoglobin and subsequent breakdown of he.
