The binding of 6-mercaptohexanoic acid to EGF induces a conformational change in the protein, which initiates a cascade of reactions leading to cell proliferation and differentiation. This molecule has also been shown to bind to odorant binding proteins, which are mainly responsible for detecting odors and pheromones. 6-mercaptohexanoic acid has also been used as an antimicrobial agent, because it inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis and DNA replication. This compound can be used as a hydrogen bond donor or acceptor, forming hydrogen bonds with the peptide backbone.
