Clofoctol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic. It is used in the treatment of respiratory tract and ear, nose and throat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. It is only functional against Gram-positive bacteria, It penetrates into human lung tissue. Clofoctol is a fatty acid that is used as an antimicrobial agent. Clofoctol inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing translation of the genetic code into proteins. Clofoctol has been shown to be active against a wide range of human pathogens and some bacterial species that are resistant to other antibiotics. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in vitro, suggesting it may have therapeutic potential for this disease. Clofoctol has been demonstrated to decrease choroidal neovascularization in animal models of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
