Octyl-alpha-ketoglutarate is a prolyl hydroxylases substrate which accumulates rapidly in cells with dysfunctional tricarboxylic acid cycle. Octyl-alpha-ketoglutarate also prevents succinate or fumarate mediated inhibition of prolyl hydroxylases.
