Substance P is a neurokinin undecapeptide neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. Neuropeptide found in high concentrations in the gut. When released from afferent nerves, causes a neurogenic inflammatory response, including mast cell degranulation. Induces Ca2+ mobilization. Reported to activate Goalpha, Gq/11alpha, and Gsalpha subunits in CHO cells via activation of substance P receptors. Also reported to induce superoxide production in neutrophils.
