Solithromycin is a fluoroketolide with potent activity against bacterial pathogens that are susceptible or resistant to other macrolide antibiotics. Solithromycin binds to the large 50S subunit of the ribosome inhibiting protein biosynthesis, and is a potent inhibitor of cytokine (TNF-alpha and IL-8) release and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. Solithromycin is active against Gram-positive, fastidious Gram-negative organisms, including Neisseria gonorrheae, and Plasmodium sp.
