Avenanthramide B is a member of complex of phenolics produced by oats (Avena sativa) isolated and synthesised by Collins, Food Research Centre, Agriculture Canada in 1989. Structurally avenanthramides are a fusion of cinnamic and anthranilic acids. Specifically, avenanthramide B is a conjugate of ferulic acid and 5-hydroxyanthranilic acid. Avenanthramide B acts as a plant phytoalexin and antioxidant to protect oats in response to pathogen attack.
