Benzalkonium Chloride is used as an antimicrobial agent in preservative nasal sprays. It has recently been examined where it appears to produce adverse clinical effects on the human nasal tissue. Benzalkonium Chloride, NF Grade consists of dodecyl and tetradecyl components of benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. It appears as a colorless or slightly yellowish viscous liquid at room temperature. Benzalkonium chloride has three main categories of use: as a biocide, a cationic surfactant, and phase transfer agent in the chemical industry. It is widely used in cosmetics, wet wipes, hand and surface sanitizers. It is an organic salt classified as a quaternary ammonium compound.
