Collagen is an inert, rigid protein found predominantly in skin, ligaments, bones and teeth. Its most distinctive attribute, essential to a transmitter of mechanical force, is inelasticity. Its fundamental structural unit is tropo-collagen, a molecular rod about 2600A in length and 15A in diameter and 300,000 molecular weight. In tendons these macromolecules, grouped as collagen fibrils, run parallel to the axis. In skin the fibrils are interlaced and branched. Highly purified type II collagen. Suitable for use as a standard for collagen analysis by SDS gel, as a substrate for MMP-1, MMP-8 and MMP-13, and as an antigen for immunizing animals for the induction of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in certain species and strains of experimental animals. Solubility: Soluble in acidic buffer (maximum 4mg/ml), but difficult to dissolve in neutral buffer. In order to dissolve this product in neutral buffer, first dissolve in 0.01 or 0.05M acetic acid, and then add into neutral buffer containing 0.2M NaCl or dialyze against the same buffer. Note: To avoid fibril formation under neutral conditions, it is recommended to use a buffer containing 0.15-0.2M sodium chloride and keep on ice. Type II collagen does not form a stable gel with incubation at 37C. To prepare a type II collagen gel, addition components such as Type I collagen or other substances may be required. Storage and Stability: Lyophilized and reconstituted products are stable for 6 months after receipt at -20C. Store at -20C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Sensitive to light.
