epi-Lactose is an epimer of Lactose and is also known to exhibit prebiotic properties. An inducer of xylanase and cellulase. Epilactose is a monosaccharide with biological properties. It is the 2-epimer of lactulose, and can be synthesized from cellobiose by epimerase. Epilactose has been shown to have beneficial effects on bowel disease in mice, which may be related to its ability to stimulate intestinal motility and improve the intestinal microflora. Epilactose has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity in rats with colitis. Epilactose can be used as a structural probe for oligosaccharides, due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with sugars. In addition, epilactose has been found in marine microalgae such as Chlorella pyrenoidosa, but not in higher plants or animals.
