Hemoglobin powder is freeze-dried hemoglobin for use in preparing microbiological culture media. Hemoglobin Powder is obtained from desiccated beef blood. Hemoglobin Powder is used with GC Agar in the preparation of Chocolate Agar, Thayer-Martin Medium, Modified Thayer-Martin Medium, Martin-Lewis Agar, and Transgrow Agar. Supplemented with Hemoglobin Powder and growth enrichment, these enriched media are used for the isolation and cultivation of fastidious microorganisms, especially Nesseria spp. and Haemophilus spp. Hemoglobin Powder provides hemin (X factor) required for growth of Haemophilus and for enhanced growth of Neisseria spp. In the preparation of Chocolate Agar, Hemoglobin powder is used in a 2% solution. Source: Bovine blood Applications: Used to prepare chocolate agar, Thayer-Martin Medium, Modified Thayer-Martin Medium, Martin-Lewis Agar, and Transgrow Agar. Appearance: Dark brown, homogenous, free flowing powder Solubility: Brown to dark brown, opaque pH (2%): 7.8-8.6 Loss on Drying: 1% Growth: Neisseira meningitidis ATCC 13090: Good growth Haemophilus influenzae ATCC 10211: Good growth Storage and Stability: Store powdered media at RT. Opened bottles should be capped tightly and kept in a dark, low humidity environment. Prepared media should be kept at 4C and used within a short period of time. Note: Since native hemoglobin is readily oxidized in air, these preparations may be predominantly methemoglobin. Opened bottles should be capped tightly and kept in a dark, low humidity environment.
