a-Lipoic acid is a metabolite of the essential amino acid threonine and an antioxidant. It has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease, oxidative injury, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. a-Lipoic acid has also been shown to have beneficial effects in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and as an adjuvant therapy for cancer chemotherapies. The biochemical properties of this agent have been studied extensively, with a focus on its protective effects against mitochondrial membrane depolarization and long-term toxicity. There are no reports of genotoxicity or carcinogenicity.
