Parkin is essential for mitophagy, the selective clearance of dysfunctional mitochondria, thereby maintaining cellular homeostasis. Mutations in PARK2 cause autosomal recessive juvenile Parkinsons disease, leading to dopaminergic neuron loss. Beyond neuroprotection, Parkin influences apoptosis regulation and cellular stress responses.
