GM1 oligosaccharide interacts and modulates tyrosine kinases such as neural tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The compound is also found in epithelial membranes and is a key element for bacterial toxicity and viral infection since it acts as a receptor for the B-subunits of heat labile toxin, cholera toxin, rotavirus, and simian virus 40. It also has the ability to bind amyloid-beta proteins and is involved in Alzheimers pathogenesis.
